The City of San Antonio Aviation Department has been presented with an award for the quality of its strategic planning. The Richard Goodman Award by the Association of Strategic Planning (ASP) is in recognition of the San Antonio Airport System’s creative and realistic approach to strategic planning.
“Strategic planning is critical to the airport’s success in customer experience, business development and future growth,” says San Antonio Aviation Director Tom Jones, “In fact, a recent organization restructuring has elevated strategic planning to a senior leadership position with oversight of initiatives that are key to the department’s mission, vision and priorities.”
The ASP awards committee praised San Antonio in several areas, including the “effective and creative” use of the airport’s FAA Master Plan and Safety Management System, a “holistic view…both outside in and inside out” of the airport’s own planning process, and innovation in using and understanding airport metrics notably in relation to customer experience.
“Although all airports have a master plan to grow infrastructure, strategic planning is not common in the US airport industry,” says San Antonio Aviation Interim Chief Strategy Officer Nathaniel Polsgrove, “An overarching strategic plan directs a course to grow airport business.”
The 2016 Richard Goodman Award was presented to the City of San Antonio Aviation Department at the ASP annual conference on March 18.
