Stinson Municipal Airport, the second oldest continuously operated airport in the United States, will host a ceremony to mark the start of construction of its new Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) this week. The airport’s new ATCT will be an iconic structure commemorating over 100 years of aviation at Stinson.
The tower’s design is entitled “Wings over Stinson” and has bi-plane style wings reminiscent of the early days at Stinson along the sides of the structure. At night the wings will be illuminated to ensure the tower’s iconic look both during the day and at night. The design reflects the airport’s close connection to historic local San Antonio missions and reinforces Stinson’s place in the World Heritage District.
The project is jointly funded by the Texas Department of Transportation and the City of San Antonio and is expected to be completed in April 2018 just in time for the City’s Tri-Centennial celebration.
